Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has assigned ministers to each of the 15 zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to closely monitor development projects and ensure the effective implementation of welfare schemes across the city.

Chennai district in-charge Minister Aadhav Arjuna will coordinate the ministers’ activities and oversee the broader implementation of government programmes throughout the corporation limits. The arrangement is intended to strengthen coordination among departments, speed up civic projects and enable closer supervision of schemes at the zonal level.

Under the allocation announced by the government, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister Ramesh has been given charge of Tiruvottiyur, Zone 1 and Manali, Zone 2, in north Chennai. Information Technology and Digital Services Minister T. Lokesh Tamilselvan will monitor Madhavaram, Zone 3 and Tondiarpet, Zone 4.

Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Dr K.G. Arunraj has been assigned Royapuram, Zone 5 and Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Zone 6. Handlooms, Textiles and Khadi Minister M. Vijay Balaji will have responsibility for three zones — Ambattur, Zone 7; Anna Nagar, Zone 8; and Teynampet, Zone 9. His allocation covers localities extending from the city’s western neighbourhoods to important central areas.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Dr T.K. Biju will oversee Kodambakkam, Zone 10, and Valasaravakkam, Zone 11. Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban has been placed in charge of Alandur, Zone 12 and Adyar, Zone 13. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K. Vignesh will supervise Perungudi, Zone 14 and Sholinganallur, Zone 15.

These southern zones include rapidly developing residential and commercial neighbourhoods as well as major information technology corridors.

The ministers are expected to review the progress of development works, identify delays and coordinate with GCC officials and other government departments to resolve implementation issues. They will also monitor whether welfare measures are reaching eligible residents and examine civic requirements specific to the zones under their charge.

The citywide allocation gives every GCC zone a designated ministerial supervisor while retaining a central coordinating role for the Chennai district in-charge minister. The government expects the structure to improve accountability and facilitate quicker decisions on local infrastructure, public services and welfare delivery.

Regular reviews are also expected to help authorities address zone-specific concerns and maintain closer contact between the state administration, the corporation and residents across Chennai under the newly introduced monitoring arrangement.
