Malkangiri: A serious allegation of a kangaroo court-like village committee meeting has surfaced in Malkangiri district, where a young man allegedly was beaten and fined Rs 45,000, following which he died by suicide, his family has alleged.
The deceased has been identified as Sagar Sarkar, a resident of MV-92 village under Serpali panchayat in the district.
According to the family, Sarkar had been working at a shrimp processing firm in Tamil Nadu, where he allegedly developed a relationship with a married woman from Kolkata. The two later came to Malkangiri and were staying in a rented house at Kalimela.
The woman’s husband subsequently submitted a written complaint before the village committee, alleging that Sarkar had brought his wife to Malkangiri.
Following the complaint, a meeting of the village committee was reportedly convened on Monday. The family alleged that Sarkar was beaten during the meeting and imposed a fine of Rs 45,000.
They further alleged that Sarkar was deeply distressed and mentally shattered after the incident and, unable to bear the humiliation, died by suicide.
However, the village sarpanch has denied the allegations that Sarkar was beaten or that a fine of Rs 45,000 was collected from him.
Police have reached the spot and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and the allegations made by the family.
