Bhubaneswar: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear an application seeking vacation of the interim order in the ongoing dispute over the appointment of Odisha’s next Director General of Police (DGP).
The proceedings are scheduled for 10:30 AM before a three-judge Bench comprising the Chief Justice, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana.
It is pertinent to mention that the dispute is rooted in the Supreme Court’s landmark Prakash Singh police-reforms judgment. Under the Court’s directions, the State DGP is to be selected from a panel prepared by the UPSC, with consideration given to factors including service record, experience and merit.
The Supreme Court subsequently issued further directions in July 2018, requiring States to send their proposals to the UPSC sufficiently in advance and requiring the UPSC to prepare the panel in accordance with the Court’s directions.
In 2019, the Court also clarified that the UPSC panel should be based on merit among eligible officers having at least six months of residual service before retirement.
