Sundaragada: Coal transportation at the Garjanbahal coal mine in Sundaragada district came to a standstill on Friday after a violent clash between two groups allegedly associated with transport companies left at least four drivers injured and triggered a protest by transport workers.
The clash reportedly occurred late on Thursday night under the jurisdiction of Hemgir Police Station. According to sources, the dispute erupted over the priority of trucks waiting in the queue to enter the mine for coal loading. What began as a verbal altercation between drivers and employees of two transport companies soon escalated into a violent confrontation.
At least four drivers of the SUPL transport company allegedly sustained serious injuries after being assaulted by members of the rival group. They were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The incident sparked widespread resentment among transport workers. On Friday morning, scores of drivers staged a protest outside the mine gate, blocking the movement of coal-laden trucks and bringing transportation operations to a complete halt. The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the assault and adequate security for drivers engaged in coal transportation.
On receiving information, personnel from Hemgir Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police held discussions with the agitating drivers and assured them that appropriate action would be taken after a thorough investigation.
An inquiry has been initiated into the incident, and further investigation is underway.
