Brahmapur: A fire broke out at the boys’ hostel of the Nursing College inside the Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati (MKCG) Medical College campus here on Friday, triggering concern among students and staff.
According to available information, the fire reportedly originated from a gas pipe in the kitchen on the ground floor after a gas leak. Students present at the spot noticed the smell of gas and alerted the fire services.
A special fire-fighting team soon reached the campus and brought the blaze under control. No casualties have been reported in the incident so far.
The incident, however, has raised concerns over the fire-safety arrangements at the premier medical institution, with reports suggesting that the existing fire-fighting infrastructure is inadequate and some of the equipment has already expired.
MKCG Medical College and Hospital is considered a major healthcare lifeline for southern Odisha and caters to patients from several districts. The latest incident has also brought renewed attention to fire safety on the campus, where similar fire incidents have reportedly occurred in the past.
Repeated incidents have prompted concerns among various sections of society over the need to strengthen fire-prevention and emergency-response measures at the institution.
