Baripada: A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly strangling his mother to death following a quarrel at Barjapur village under Baripada Sadar police station in Mayurbhanj district, police said.
The accused, identified as Kuiyan Singh, was taken into custody after his mother Srimati Singh was found dead at their residence on Friday morning.
According to police, Srimati had been raising her four sons and two daughters after the death of her husband. Following the marriage of her daughters, she and her four sons had moved to Chennai, where they were working. Srimati and her second son Kuiyan had recently returned to their village.
Police suspect that an argument broke out between the mother and son on Thursday night. During the altercation, Kuiyan allegedly pressed his mother’s throat, following which she collapsed.
Neighbours informed the police the today morning. Baripada Sadar SDPO Prabhat Mallick reached the spot along with a scientific team and conducted a preliminary investigation. The body was subsequently seized and sent for post-mortem examination.
Police said marks were visible on Srimati’s neck. The exact cause of death will be established after receipt of the post-mortem report, the SDPO said.
An investigation into the incident is underway.
