Baripada/Bhubaneswar: In a heart-wrenching incident, a differently-abled girl drowned while trying to save her brother from being swept away in a canal in Mayurbhanj district. Both siblings reportedly drowned in the mishap and their bodies have been recovered.
The deceased siblings have been identified as Parameswar Nayak and Nandini Nayak.
As per reports, the tragedy occurred when Parameswar and Nandini from Mahalarpada village under Khunta police station were crossing the canal of the Naluha River. Suddenly, the brother was swept away by the strong water current. Seeing him being washed away, Nandini jumped into the canal to rescue him, but both were swept away in the strong flow.
Upon being informed, fire services personnel from Khunta rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies from two different locations near the Karakachia bridge. The bodies were later handed over to the police. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over Mahalarpada village.
In a separate incident, a 69-year-old man went missing after being swept away while bathing in the Mahendratanaya River in Paralakhemundi. The incident took place at around 5:40 am in the Amara area of Paralakhemundi.
The missing person has been identified as Durga Prasad Panda of the locality.
As per reports, like every day, he had gone to the Mahendratanaya River for a bath early this morning. He was swept away due to the strong current.
Till last report came in, a search operation was underway to locate him.
