Sundaragada: Cyber police in Sundaragada district have restored over Rs 1.14 crore to a company that lost around Rs 1.85 crore in a Business Email Compromise (BEC) fraud, police said on Saturday.

The Cyber Crime and Economic Offences Police Station registered a case on May 17 following the fraud involving M/s Govindam Projects Pvt. Ltd. The company was allegedly duped after fraudsters impersonated an authorised person through a deceptive email and induced it to alter its bank account details.

Two fraudulent RTGS transactions of Rs 65,57,436 and Rs 1,19,88,000, totalling Rs 1,85,45,436, were subsequently transferred to a suspected beneficiary account.

During the investigation, police traced and put on hold Rs 1,14,88,063.52 in the concerned bank account. Following an order of the SDJM, Sundaragada, passed on August 14 in Miscellaneous Case No. 139 of 2026, and completion of necessary formalities, the recovered amount was restored to the victim company’s bank account.

Police also arrested a 26-year-old man identified as Zubair alias Jibair alias Juberji alias Zubair Khan of Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh on September 9 with the assistance of Uttar Pradesh Police. Two mobile phones, SIM cards and other documents were seized from him.

After obtaining transit remand from a court in Uttar Pradesh, the accused was brought to Sundargarh on Saturday. Following a medical examination, he was produced before the SDJM, Sundaragada, and sent for judicial custody.

Further investigation is underway to trace the remaining accused and recover the unrecovered amount, police said.
