Gangtok: Heavy rainfall has triggered heightened landslide activity in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district, particularly at Singlitam and Rimbi, forcing authorities to evacuate 28 houses comprising 128 people from vulnerable locations at Rimbi as precautionary measures, officials said on Tuesday.
The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) said the landslide incidents have been reported since September 12, affecting residential areas and public infrastructure.
The district administration and various line departments are maintaining round-the-clock surveillance while undertaking relief, restoration and safety operations.
At Singlitam, seven households directly affected by the landslide have been shifted to a relief centre at Singlitam Ward. More than 33 people, including children and elderly residents, are currently staying at the shelter, where the administration is providing food and other essential supplies.
At Rimbi, four houses where 18 people were living were initially evacuated from vulnerable locations, and the families moved to relatives’ homes. Following heavy rain and flooding on September 14, authorities expanded the evacuation operation, shifting 128 residents from 28 houses to the Rimbi Gram Panchayat Kendra.
Officials identified the area around Mandir Point as the main zone of landslide activity.
The lower-lying Rimbi Ward remains vulnerable to further slope failures.
Debris has accumulated along the NiK Kholsa stream, with water carrying loose material towards Rimbi village.
The resulting surge has already washed away an RCC bridge and is obstructing the natural flow of water, raising concerns of sudden debris and water release during intense rainfall. The Rimbi River has also altered its course and is impacting the roadside flank.
The state government is working on the construction of a Bailey Bridge at a higher location after the main road was washed away on the night of May 14. Continuous debris clearance and road restoration work are also underway.
At Singlitam, lighting has been installed at the affected site to facilitate monitoring during rainfall. A temporary bamboo bridge is scheduled to be constructed from September 15 to improve local movement, while water pipes are being supplied to restore connectivity to the Rimbi relief camp and village water tank.
The Rimbi ICDS Centre, located below the expanding landslide zone, was flooded on September 14. Authorities have advised the department to explore shifting the centre to a safer location.
Residents have been urged to avoid landslide zones, rivers and streams during heavy rain and immediately report fresh cracks, ground movement, unusual sounds or sudden changes in water flow to authorities.
