Nabarangpur: A premature baby weighing just 540 grams at birth has survived after undergoing 78 days of intensive treatment and care at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the District Headquarters Hospital here, officials said.

The baby, born at around seven months of pregnancy to Tulabati and Narayan Bhatara of Dalchhapara village under Papadahandi block, was admitted to the hospital’s SNCU soon after birth. Given the extremely low birth weight and premature condition, the case posed a major challenge for the medical team, with the newborn developing complications during the course of treatment.

The doctors and medical staff continued specialised care and round-the-clock monitoring, while the family extended its cooperation throughout the treatment. After 78 days, the baby’s weight increased from 540 grams to 1.6 kg.

The infant continues to remain under treatment and observation at the SNCU under the supervision of paediatric specialist Dr Rajnikant and the medical team.

Doctors said survival of babies born with such extremely low birth weight is generally challenging and described the successful management of the case as a significant achievement for healthcare services in the remote district.

Nabarangpur MLA Gouri Shankar Majhi praised the doctors and medical staff for their efforts, while the state Health & Family Welfare Department also appreciated the SNCU team for successfully treating the premature baby.
