Bhubaneswar: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Wednesday a public interest litigation challenging the selection process of Odisha’s Director General of Police (DGP).
A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohan will take up the matter.
It is pertinent to mention that the petition was filed by Jayant Das from Baleshwar. He had alleged that the Odisha government failed to follow the Supreme Court’s 2006 directions in the Prakash Singh case, which laid down the procedure for appointing DGPs.
During earlier hearings, the court’s amicus curiae, Raju Ramachandran also pointed to a lack of transparency in the selection process. Acting on the court’s orders, the amicus has already submitted two reports in the matter.
Ramachandran has further questioned the state government’s decision to promote two Additional Director General (ADG)-rank officers to the rank of DGP.
