Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident that has sent ripples across Debagada district, a young man was allegedly beaten and set on fire by his girlfriend’s family after he visited her house late at night in Reamal.
The deceased, identified as Silu Ray, a resident of nearby Babarakot village.
According to reports, deceased, Silu, had completed his engineering studies and worked in the local area for a few years. About four months ago, he moved to Mumbai and joined a private organisation. He had returned home from Mumbai only yesterday morning. In the evening, he informed his family that he was going towards Debagada. He later went to meet his girlfriend at her residence near Lakshmi Chhak in Riamal. Family members of the girl spotted him there. A quarrel broke out, following which the family members allegedly attacked Silu, beat him severely until he was bloodied, poured petrol on him and set him on fire.
The victim’s family has alleged that Silu was burnt alive by the girlfriend’s family while he was still in a bloodied condition. His body is currently lying at the girlfriend’s house.
On receiving information, Reamal police reached the spot and detained the girlfriend along with her father and mother.
Meanwhile, police have sealed the crime scene. Further investigation will be carried out after the arrival of the scientific team and sniffer dogs.
Meanwhile, the elder brother of the deceased, Yashodhar Ray, has lodged a written complaint in this connection at Reamal police station.
