Bhubaneswar: Schools and Anganwadi centres have been closed in several districts of Odisha as a precautionary measure against heavy to extremely heavy rainfall expected under the influence of a depression over the Bay of Bengal.
In Ganjam, the district administration has ordered the closure of all government, government-aided and private schools from September 22 to 24. However, Jagatsinghpur district administration has announced the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres on September 22 in view of the heavy rainfall forecast.
In Gajapati, schools and Anganwadi centres will remain shut from September 22 to 24. The order covers both government and private institutions.
On the other hand, Khordha district administration has also directed the closure of all government, government-aided and private schools, along with Anganwadi centres, from September 22 to 24. Teachers and other staff will, however, continue to report for duty. The previously scheduled NRTS examination will be conducted as planned.
In Koraput, the district administration has issued an alert directing all teachers not to leave their headquarters until September 25.
The school closure order for multiple districts was issued as the depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast and cross between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur during the night of September 23 and the early hours of September 24.
