Bhubaneswar: The opening day of the Odisha Assembly’s Monsoon Session was disrupted by repeated protests on Tuesday, with Opposition BJD and Congress members raising slogans over the MMDR Bill and alleged errors in school textbooks, prompting Speaker Surama Padhy to adjourn the House twice.
The House was first adjourned till 1.10 pm after Opposition members entered the Well carrying placards and raised slogans over the issues. When the Assembly reconvened, the Opposition members again created a ruckus, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings till 4 pm.
The session began with obituary references to departed legislators, public figures and public servants. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi moved condolence motions and expressed grief over the demise of the distinguished personalities.
The House also paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the floods in Nepal. Members observed the customary solemn proceedings before the House proceeded with its scheduled business.
However, as Question Hour began, BJD and Congress MLAs rushed to the Well carrying placards. They raised slogans over the MMDR Bill and alleged errors in school textbooks, disrupting the proceedings.
Speaker Surama Padhy appealed to the protesting members to return to their seats and allow the House to function. With the protests continuing, she adjourned the House till 1.10 pm.
When the House met again at 1.10 pm, Opposition members resumed their protest. The continued uproar prevented normal proceedings, following which the Speaker adjourned the House till 4 pm.
