Rayagada: A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his younger brother over a family dispute in Rayagada district in 2022.
District and Sessions Judge Damodar Rath convicted Dambu Huika and awarded him life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000. In default of payment, he will undergo an additional six months of imprisonment.
According to the case records, on February 27, 2022, Dambu attacked his younger brother Minduru Huika with an axe at Dambu village under Kalyansinghpur police station limits. He allegedly struck Minduru on the head and chest, killing him on the spot, and subsequently dumped the body in a nearby forest.
The case was registered following a complaint lodged by the accused’s father, Teladi Huika. The deceased’s mother, Palu Huika, was among the key witnesses. A total of 16 witnesses deposed during the trial.
The court, while delivering the judgment, also directed the government to provide Rs 2 lakh to the family for their maintenance, noting that the mother had testified against her own son in the case.
Public Prosecutor Bikram Kumar Kunda represented the government, while police officer Mukundadev Nayak investigated the case.
