Bhubaneswar: The deep depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal has crossed the north Andhra Pradesh coast and is now positioned over the region, bringing strong winds and the potential for heavy rainfall in the coming days.
According to the latest update, the system crossed the coast close to southwest of Kalingapatnam between 11 pm on September 23 and 1 am on September 24. At the time of landfall it packed maximum sustained winds of 55–65 kmph, gusting up to 75 kmph.
As of 5:30 am on Thursday, the deep depression lay centred over north coastal Andhra Pradesh near latitude 18.3°N and longitude 83.7°E. It was located approximately 50 km west of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 80 km north-northeast of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, and 170 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha.
In the six hours prior to the morning update, the system had moved slowly west-northwestwards at a speed of about 3 kmph.
Meteorologists expect the deep depression to continue moving northwestwards while maintaining its intensity for the next 12 hours. Thereafter, it is likely to turn north-northwestwards and gradually weaken over the subsequent 24 hours.
Residents in coastal and southern districts of Odisha, along with adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh, are advised to remain alert for strong winds, heavy to very heavy rainfall, and possible flooding or disruptions in low-lying area.
According to IMD, several parts of South Odisha experienced moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the night. The weather agency has indicated that the ongoing influence of the deep depression system near the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border is expected to bring intermittent to continuous rain, particularly in the southern districts. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.
Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea until conditions improve. Further updates will be issued as the system evolves.
