Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police is planning to set up special units in all police districts to deal with organised and sensitive crime cases, DGP Vinaytosh Mishra said on Saturday.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a passing-out parade of constable trainees in Sambalpur, Mishra said each unit will function under the direct control of the concerned Superintendent of Police.
“Officers in police stations remain busy with local law and order and routine crimes, so they do not get enough time for proper investigation of organised or inter-state crimes. The special units will fill that gap,” the DGP said.
He said Odisha Police is giving major emphasis to combating cybercrime and illegal sale and distribution of drugs, with special drives and awareness campaigns underway to make the state drug-free. On cybercrime, Mishra said the government has set up cyber police stations in every district this year, while a State Cyber Command Coordination Centre has been notified and will be set up soon.
He said recovery of stolen mobile phones has improved significantly from 7 per cent to 27 per cent. “We are targeting to take it to 50 per cent by December-end,” he added. Appealing to people to stay cautious online, the DGP said, “Do not click unknown links or reply to unknown messages. If you are not familiar with online systems, please do not try financial transactions yourself.
The DGP attended the passing-out parade of the fifth batch of 1,027 constable trainees at the Basic Training Institute, Burla. Congratulating the trainees, he asked them to face future challenges with courage and maintain a friendly attitude towards the public.
