Bhubaneswar: More than 10,000 runners took to the streets across Odisha on World Tourism Day as a synchronised statewide Promo Run was organised at 32 locations to promote fitness, tourism and the upcoming OMC Puri Coastal Marathon 2026.
Organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Odisha, the statewide running initiative brought together runners, citizens, local communities and stakeholders across districts and municipal corporations, creating a large-scale movement around the message of a fitter and more active Odisha.
The Promo Run marked the first time that such a large-scale running activity was conducted simultaneously across multiple locations in the state. Participants took to the streets on the occasion of World Tourism Day, turning the event into a collective celebration of health, fitness and Odisha’s tourism potential.
From urban centres to district towns, people from different walks of life participated in the runs. District- and corporation-level authorities played a key role in coordinating the events, working closely with the tourism department and local stakeholders to facilitate participation and ensure smooth conduct of the programme.
The statewide initiative also marked the first major promotional activity leading up to the OMC Puri Coastal Marathon 2026, which is scheduled to be held in Puri on December 13.
The marathon is being positioned as a unique sporting and tourism experience that will bring together runners while showcasing Odisha’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, spectacular coastline, hospitality and the spiritual significance of Puri.
Officials said the synchronised runs were aimed not only at generating awareness about the upcoming marathon but also at highlighting running as a means of promoting healthier lifestyles and active communities.
The initiative also sought to connect sports and tourism, using running as a platform to showcase Odisha’s diverse tourism destinations and encourage greater participation in sporting activities.
With the successful completion of the statewide Promo Run, the focus now shifts to Puri, where the OMC Puri Coastal Marathon will be held on December 13.
The event is expected to bring together the spirit of running and Odisha’s distinctive cultural and natural identity, further strengthening the link between sports, fitness and tourism in the state.
