Nabarangpur: An 80-year-old woman was allegedly raped after being dragged into a forest near Khutugaon under Raighar police station limits in Nabarangpur district on Monday evening, following which police detained a youth in connection with the incident.
The accused has been identified as Pilaram Gond of Kolipoda village under Kuraveda panchayat. Police are questioning him after villagers caught and handed him over to the police.
According to the complaint, the elderly woman was walking alone from Chalanpara village to her daughter’s house at Khutugaon at around 5.30 pm when Pilaram and two of his companions allegedly spotted her.
The three allegedly dragged her into a nearby forest and sexually assaulted her. Later, while attempting to flee, Pilaram was allegedly caught by some youths who had entered the forest after hearing the woman’s screams.
The villagers rescued the woman, who was reportedly found in a semi-conscious condition, and informed residents of Khutugaon and Chalanpara villages. She was subsequently admitted to Primary Health Centre (PHC) Raighar for treatment.
The victim allegedly identified Pilaram as the person who had assaulted her. His two alleged companions, however, managed to flee from the spot.
A written complaint was lodged at Raighar police station by the victim’s son. Police have detained Pilaram and are conducting further interrogation and investigation into the incident.
