Baleshwar: A huge, decomposed whale carcass, measuring around 40 feet in length, has washed ashore near Mahishali under the Chandipur Range in Baleshwar district, officials said.
The carcass, which was found in an advanced state of decomposition, had several large bones exposed. It is estimated to have a girth of around 20 feet.
On being informed, a team comprising the Chandipur Range Officer, a Forester, a Forest Guard and a representative of Rasalpur Veterinary Surgeon (VS) reached the spot and conducted a post-mortem examination of the carcass.
According to preliminary information, the whale is suspected to have died in the sea, with its carcass subsequently drifting ashore near Mahishali along the Chandipur coast due to storm-induced conditions.
The carcass was completely decomposed when it was found, making it difficult to ascertain the exact time and cause of the whale’s death.
