Kataka: A mentally ill patient undergoing treatment at the Psychiatry department of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Kataka was allegedly beaten to death, following which his family lodged a complaint with Mangalabag police, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Srikanta Das of Jajpur district. He had been admitted to the Psychiatry department of the hospital on September 28, according to the family.
Das was found dead in the psychiatry department on Monday night, the family alleged, adding that injury marks and other signs of assault were noticed on various parts of his body.
The family has alleged that security personnel deployed in the psychiatry department were responsible for the death and sought action against those involved.
Following the complaint, Mangalabag police registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to Das’s death.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, police said. The exact cause of death is expected to be established after the autopsy and further investigation.
