Brahmapur: One youth was killed and three others were seriously injured in a road accident near Bhagyalakshmi Nagar under Chhatrapur police station limits in Ganjam district on Thursday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Tukuna Achari of Bhagyalakshmi Nagar. The injured were identified as Budu Gouda, Akash Gouda and Prashant Sabar.
According to eyewitnesses, a truck collided with a bus that was parked on the roadside along the national highway. Following the impact, the bus reportedly lost balance and ran over several scooters and motorcycles parked nearby.
Tukuna, who was at the spot at the time, came under the wheels of the bus and sustained critical injuries.
On being informed, Fire Service personnel reached the spot and used a power cutter to cut open the bus and rescue Tukuna.
Chhatrapur MLA Krushna Chandra Nayak also reached the spot and transported Tukuna and the three injured persons in his vehicle to the Chhatrapur Sub-Divisional Hospital. Doctors there declared Tukuna dead.
The incident triggered tension and grief in the area, with a sombre atmosphere prevailing at the hospital following the youth’s death.
Meanwhile, the truck involved in the accident reportedly fled the spot. Police from Chamakhandi police station later pursued the vehicle and intercepted it on the Kaliabali road, sources said.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the accident.
