Bhubaneswar: Eminent neurosurgeon and Padma Shri awardee Dr Ashok Kumar Mahapatra has been shifted to AIIMS, New Delhi for advanced treatment after his health deteriorated on Friday.
As per reports, Dr. Mahapatra was admitted to SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar a few days back after he experienced severe pain in his brain. He was shifted to Delhi AIIMS. A specialist medical team accompanied him, while senior officials of SOA University and his family members coordinated with doctors at AIIMS.
Famous for leading the historic separation surgery of Odisha’s conjoined twins Jaga-Balia, Dr. Mahapatra is one of the most respected names in Indian neurosurgery. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his exceptional contribution to medicine.
He is currently serving as Principal Advisor of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) Deemed to be University after serving as its Vice-Chancellor. He had earlier served as Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar and AIIMS New Delhi.
Known for his clinical excellence as well as his association with social, cultural and spiritual initiatives, news of his illness has sparked concern across the state. Several organisations and well-wishers have prayed for his speedy recovery at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.
