Bhubaneswar: The Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW) has sought a report from the Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) on the alleged rape of a woman at gunpoint at her residence in Bhubaneswar.
A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a masked man at her rented flat in the Nayapalli police station area on Wednesday night, police said.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the Commission has sought a detailed report from the Bhubaneswar DCP within 15 days. SCW member Urmila Mohapatra visited Nayapalli police station on Friday and held discussions with the investigating officers.
“Women are safe in Odisha. However, incidents can happen anywhere – inside a house, at a bus stand or while moving on the street. But the ill-mindset of youths needs to be changed,” Mohapatra told media persons.
Stating that the state government has taken the case seriously, she said police are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the truth. “The victim is unknown to the accused. Police are investigating as per the complaint filed by the victim, and I hope the accused will be arrested soon,” she said.
Bhubaneswar DCP Saravana Vivek M said multiple teams have been formed to crack the case. “We have formed multiple teams to crack down on the case with the arrest of the accused. The investigation is at an advanced stage,” the DCP said.
