Brahmapur: Tension prevailed at Khallikote Unitary University (KUU) here on Monday following the announcement of the student union election notification, after a clash broke out between two groups, leading to the detention of nine persons.
Police were deployed on the university campus following the incident, while the detained persons were taken to Brahmapur Town Police Station.
The incident reportedly took place after the notification for the student union election was announced on the campus. According to a student, sweets were distributed and students were celebrating the announcement when some media persons arrived to speak to them about the election.
The student alleged that five to seven persons wearing civilian clothes later approached them and used abusive language. The students initially ignored them and left the spot, he claimed.
The student further alleged that when they returned to the university after lunch, they found the group waiting near the university gate with sticks.
“As we entered the university premises, they attacked me with a stick, injuring my left hand. Three other students were also attacked,” the student said.
He said the students subsequently called the emergency number 112 and went to the Vice-Chancellor’s chamber.
“After the police arrived, we were taken to Brahmapur Town Police Station. I also have video evidence of the incident, and the accused have been threatening me,” he alleged.
Police have detained nine persons in connection with the incident, and further investigation is underway.
The university authorities and police are yet to comment in detail on the allegations made by the student.
