Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway is strengthening its commitment towards clean and renewable energy by expanding solar power installations across its railway establishments.
As part of its ongoing efforts towards energy conservation, reduction of carbon emissions and promotion of sustainable railway operations, ECoR has achieved a total installed solar capacity of 486.84 kWp across its various divisions.
The solar capacity has been installed across Khurda Road, Sambalpur and Rayagada Divisions, with Khurda Road Division having the highest installed capacity of 326.84 kWp, followed by 150 kWp in Sambalpur Division and 10 kWp in Rayagada Division.
In addition, 232 railway stations across ECoR have been provided with rooftop solar installations, comprising 110 stations in Khurda Road Division, 68 stations in Sambalpur Division and 54 stations in Rayagada Division. This expansion reflects ECoR’s continued focus on increasing the use of renewable energy in railway operations.
The solar installations are also making a significant contribution towards renewable energy generation. During the financial year 2026-27, up to August 2026, solar power generation has been recorded at 67,02,707.98 units.
This increased utilisation of solar energy is helping ECoR reduce its dependence on conventional sources of electricity and promote cleaner energy consumption across its establishments.
The adoption of solar energy has also resulted in substantial financial savings for East Coast Railway. During the period under consideration, the savings from solar energy generation amounted to approximately ₹4.51 crore. These savings demonstrate the dual benefits of renewable energy adoption reducing the environmental impact of railway operations while also lowering energy expenditure.
East Coast Railway is continuously exploring opportunities to expand renewable energy infrastructure across its stations, offices, workshops and other railway establishments. The increased use of solar power is an important step towards improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and creating a more sustainable railway system.
These initiatives are in line with the broader vision of Indian Railways towards energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and increased use of renewable energy.
