Jayapur: Police have arrested a 24-year-old youth in Koraput district for allegedly refusing to take back his minor wife after she lost her eyesight following childbirth.
The accused, identified as Dhansai Majhi of Belgaon under Kotpad police limits, was arrested by personnel of the Jayapur Mahila Police Station on Thursday and produced before a court, police said.
According to the complaint, Majhi was in a relationship with the minor girl and subsequently married her. The couple later had a son. Following the delivery, the girl, who was staying at her parental home, reportedly lost her eyesight due to an illness.
Her in-laws allegedly refused to accept her back after she became visually impaired. Following the alleged refusal by Majhi and his family, the victim’s family approached the Mahila Police Station and lodged a written complaint.
Police registered a case under the POCSO Act vide Case No. 50/26 and initiated an investigation.
Mahila Police Station Inspector-in-Charge Nirmala Lima confirmed the arrest.
