Mahalaya Amavasya: A Day Of Remembrance, Gratitude And Ancestral Blessings

Mahalaya Amavasya, also known as Sarvapitri Amavasya, stands as one of Hinduism’s most sacred days of remembrance—a solemn tribute to the souls of our departed ancestors. It marks the poignant culmination of Pitru Paksha, the sixteen-day fortnight devoted entirely to honouring those who came before us.

Hindus believe that on Mahalaya Amavasya the souls of the departed draw closest to the living. From the realm of the Pitrus they continue to watch over their descendants, capable of showering blessings of health and protection or of carrying unresolved burdens that travel down the family line. The rituals of the day are therefore both an act of gratitude and a gentle unburdening—an invitation for ancestral peace to settle over the household once more.

On this final day of Pitru Paksha, families across the state turn their hearts toward those who came before them—the parents, grandparents and ancestors whose presence, though unseen, is still keenly felt.

As the entire state of Odisha immerses itself in the sacred rituals of Mahalaya Amavasya, Ommcom News delves into the rich cultural heritage and spiritual essence of this auspicious day.

Honouring the Ancestors

‘Om Pitribhyo Namah’ is an invocation addressed to the Pitrus, or ancestors.

In simple terms, it is a respectful salutation to those who came before us. During Mahalaya, the mantra accompanies the water offering made in their remembrance.

This makes it particularly suited to Sarva Pitru Amavasya, when families traditionally offer prayers for ancestors collectively. The day is also considered significant when an ancestor’s exact death Tithi is unknown or when a prescribed Shraddha could not be performed earlier.

On this auspicious day, rituals begin with an early bath and cleaning the houses. Family members offer prayers and food for their ancestors, symbolizing gratitude and reverence. These rituals are believed to satisfy the souls of the departed, ensuring their continued blessings. This sacred day serves as a poignant reminder of our ancestors’ enduring presence in our lives.

Beginning of the Festive Season

Mahalaya Amavasya does more than close the solemn fortnight of Pitru Paksha; it quietly opens the gates to the greater festive season, most notably the eagerly awaited Durga Puja.In observing this day, Hindus reaffirm an unbroken bond with their ancestors, seeking once more their guidance and protective blessings as the year turns toward celebration.

According to cherished tradition, Mahalaya also marks the sacred moment when Goddess Durga begins her journey from her heavenly abode on Mount Kailash, where she dwells with Lord Shiva, toward her maternal home on Earth—bringing with her the promise of strength, protection and joy that will soon fill every home and pandal.
