Amritsar: In another incident of firing in Punjab, two youths sustained serious injuries after unidentified assailants opened fire near Tara Wala Bridge in Amritsar on Thursday evening, officials said.
Police personnel investigating the case have cited old rivalry as the reason for the incident.
According to police, the victims have been identified as Sharanjit Singh and Akashdeep Singh, reportedly aged between 25 and 30-years-old and residents of Kotli Sakka village in Punjab’s Ajnala.
The youngsters were travelling on a motorcycle to pay obeisance at a religious place when they were attacked by around six youths who were allegedly waiting near the bridge, investigators said.
During the attack, Sharanjit Singh sustained one bullet injury, while Akashdeep Singh was hit by two bullets. The assailants immediately fled following the incident.
Upon receiving information, police rushed to the site and shifted the injured men to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu said that police recovered three empty cartridge cases from the spot, indicating that around three rounds were fired.
Ruling out any gang-war angle, the ACP added that the incident stemmed from an old personal rivalry between the two groups.
Preliminary investigations said that the parties had been involved in a serious altercation, including a violent assault, two to three years ago.
Police have identified two key suspects and are conducting raids at possible hideouts to trace the remaining accused.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
A similar incident was reported from Punjab’s Ludhiana district on Wednesday after two masked men allegedly opened fire at the room of the preacher inside Gurdwara Manji Sahib in Rajowal Kalan village of Raikot area at around 3 a.m., NDTV reported.
The incident took place days after a similar firing incident was reported from the district.
Fortunately, the preacher was not in the room at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported.
According to officials, the two masked men who entered the premises of Gurdwara Manji Sahib early Wednesday morning, had covered their faces with cloth.
After entering the complex, they allegedly took out pistols and started firing directly at the room of the preacher, Baba Baldev Singh.
The bullets struck the door and walls of the room. One of the bullets pierced through the glass fitted in the door. After carrying out the attack, the accused fled from the spot, police said.
