Bhubaneswar: A 65-year-old farmer and his 29-year-old son died of electrocution in their paddy field at Hirapur under Nachuni police limits in Khurda district late Friday night. Deceased are Rabindra Guru and his son Pabitra Guru.
They had gone to guard standing paddy crop from wild animals and had put up a solar fence charged with electricity around field.
Nachuni IIC Bibhuti Bhusan Mohapatra said Rabindra accidentally touched the live fence and got electrocuted. His son rushed to save him and also came in contact with fence and died on spot. Police recovered bodies and sent them to CHC, Tangi for inquest before handing over to family.
Police are probing how fence was electrified and whether there was any safety violation. Joint inspection by energy department and police will be held on Monday, IIC said.
Officials are examining source of power supplied to fence and circumstances that led to tragedy. “There will be joint inspection by energy department and police on Monday,” Mohapatra added.
