Baleshwar: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a youth who broke into her house and decamped with cash and gold ornaments in the Singla police station area of Baleshwar district, police said.
According to the complaint, the incident took place when the girl’s parents had gone out for work, leaving her in the care of her grandparents at their village home under Basta block.
The accused, reportedly from a neighbouring village, allegedly broke a window to enter the house late at night. He first broke open an almirah and stole cash and gold ornaments before allegedly attempting to sexually assault the minor girl, who was sleeping in another room.
The girl’s cries alerted her grandparents, who were sleeping in an adjoining room. The accused fled from the spot after they woke up.
The girl’s family subsequently lodged a written complaint at Singla police station. Police visited the spot and launched an investigation. Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused.
The incident has triggered concern in the locality, particularly as a similar case was reported from the Jaleswar police station area last month.
