Bhubaneswar: The glitzy glam world of Bollywood can be very difficult to crack. With decades long nepotism, people with real talent find it very hard to make a mark in the Hindi film industry. In addition to that, the state of Odisha is very under-represented in the national level. So, lakhs of Odias feel immensely proud when they see a familiar surname reach the top in the big bad world of movies. Here are some of them:
A brilliant art-house actor of the 70s, Sadhu Meher won the National Award for the best actor in 1974. He featured in super hit movies like Ankur, Gharaonda, Safed Haati, Bhuvan Shome and many others. He later shifted his focus to Odia films and was conferred Padma Sri by the Government of India in 2017.
Born in Ganjam, Sisir Mishra is a film director and screenwriter most renowned for directing critically acclaimed films like Bheegi Palkein, Samay Ki Dhara, Billoo Baadshaah and Aseema. In 2018, he was awarded with the Padma Shri.
This Indian-American filmmaker was born in Rourkela to the once Sundargarh Collector. She is currently based in New York City and owns a production company, Mirabai Films. She is known for directing hard-hitting films like Mississippi Masala, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding, and Salaam Bombay!
This actor-director beauty has not only made Odisha proud in the national level but also in the international forum. Her recent directorial ‘Manto’ has received critical acclaim and audience’s love alike. Her work was widely praised in Deepa Mehta’s movies Fire (1996) and Earth (1998) and Firaaq (Das’ directorial debut).
Born in Cuttack, this versatile singer can sing in as many as 22 languages. He is known for soulful songs ‘Maula Mere Lele Meri Jaan’ in Chak De India and ‘Main Jahan Rahoon’ in Namastey London.

This Indian actor is best known for his negative roles in the Hindi and Odia film industries. He has appeared in movies like Mission Kashmir, Satta, Mangal Pandey: The Rising, Raavan and Drishyam.
Born in Berhampur, this actress has acted in films like Murder 2, Ishq Wala Love, Guru Dakshina and Raid. She has also appeared in hit tv shows like Amber Dhaara, Bidaai and several other commercials.
Born in Puri, this Odia singer shot to fame after winning the show ‘India’s Raw Star’. He has rendered his soulful Sufi voice for Sahib in Bhoothnath Returns. He has also sung the ‘Bande Utkala Janini’ part in Sona Mohapatra’s rendition of ‘Rangabati’ for Coke Studio.
This young director is responsible for aptly representing Odisha on big screen after a very long time. He directed Budhia Singh: Born to Run that went on to receive National Award for Best Children's Film, 2016. He is currently working on a web series.
Sound designer Subash Sahoo was born in Kendrapada and is known for his foot-tapping numbers in Omkara, Kaminey, Khosla Ka Ghosla and Once Upon A Time In Mumbai.
