Bhubaneswar: India’s Republic Day celebrations are held on Kartavya Path, formerly known as Rajpath, due to its profound historical significance. This iconic stretch from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate has been a silent witness to India’s struggle for independence.
With India celebrating its 76th Republic Day, Ommcom News delves into the history of Kartavya Path, a historic stretch in New Delhi that plays host to India’s annual Republic Day celebrations. This iconic road has witnessed India’s transformation from a British colony to a sovereign democratic republic.
- Initially known as Kingsway, it was built in 1911 after the British Raj shifted its capital from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to New Delhi.
- After India gained independence, Kingsway was renamed Rajpath, and Queensway was rechristened as Janpath. Over the past seven decades, Rajpath has played host to annual Republic Day celebrations, symbolizing India’s transformation from a colonial rule to a sovereign democratic republic.
- In September 2022, Rajpath was renamed Kartavya Path as part of the revamped Central Vista Avenue, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This name change signifies a shift from an icon of power to a representation of public ownership and empowerment. According to PM Modi, the renaming of Rajpath to Kartavya Path marks the erasure of a “symbol of slavery” from history.
- The Republic Day Parade, held on Kartavya Path, is a grand spectacle showcasing India’s military strength, cultural diversity, and technological advancements. The parade features marching contingents from all three branches of the armed forces, impressive displays of military equipment, and thrilling performances by motorcycle teams.
- It said the old name was a symbol of the colonial legacy, and that the new designation fits the symbolic value of the central ceremonial avenue.
- This year, India is gearing up to celebrate its 76th Republic Day on January 26, 2025.
- This year, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will be the chief guest, marking his first visit to India since taking office as president in October 2024.
- The Republic Day Parade will commence at 9:30 am and start at 10:00 am from Raisina Hill near Rashtrapati Bhavan, making its way along the Kartavya Path, passing India Gate, and ending at the Red Fort, covering a distance of over five kilometers. The venue has a seating capacity of 77,000, with 42,000 seats reserved for the general public.
