BJP Leadership Looting Public, Plundering Nation: Kharge On ‘Rising’ Costs Of Essentials

New Delhi: Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Centre over the “rising prices of essential commodities”, including LPG, air travel, and medicines, accusing the government of economic mismanagement.

In a post on X, Kharge said, “The Modi government has completely dismantled the country’s strategic and economic policies — a direct consequence of which is now being borne by 1.4 billion Indians.”

Referring to recent price revisions in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and commercial LPG, he stated, “Starting today, the prices of several essential daily commodities are set to rise.”

“Commercial LPG cylinder prices are skyrocketing, while severe shortages persist on the ground. From the humble tea served at roadside eateries… to the Mid-Day Meal scheme — all face a severe adverse impact. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) has become more expensive,” he added.

The Congress leader further claimed that air travel, once made accessible to the common man, has now become “an elusive dream”, alleging that “the government has even removed the price cap”.

Raising concerns over healthcare costs, Kharge said, “Over 900 essential medicines have become costlier. Healthcare expenses have surged further. Prices of coronary stents have increased.”

He also pointed to a rise in toll charges and other expenses, stating, “Highway robbery continues unabated; Speed Post rates, too, have seen a 34 per cent hike. Plastic goods, steel, and ceramics — all sectors face a severe impact. PVC pipes for farmers have become more expensive; Bitumen prices have risen by up to 50 per cent; The construction sector is under immense pressure.”

Criticising the Centre further, Kharge said, “At a time when the common citizens, our farmers, labourers, and MSME industries remain ‘held captive’ in the hope of receiving relief, the BJP leadership — while grossly ignoring their plight — remains entirely focused on looting the public and plundering the nation amidst this crisis!”

The remarks come after Indian Oil Corporation increased the prices of its premium fuels in the national capital.

However, there has been no change in regular petrol and diesel prices, which have remained stable across major cities despite a rise in global crude oil benchmarks amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Jet fuel prices have surged sharply, crossing record levels, while commercial LPG rates have also seen a significant increase.

According to fuel retailers, the price of ATF in Delhi has been hiked by Rs 1,10,703.08 per kilolitre, or 114.5 per cent, reaching Rs 2,07,341.22 per kl.

This marks the first time that ATF prices have crossed the Rs 2 lakh per kilolitre mark.
