New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday took part in a signature campaign in support of the Women’s Reservation Bill at the Arts Faculty of Delhi University. She urged that women need to play a “major role” in making policies as well as in administration, in order to successfully run the country.

Notably, after the Parliament’s Budget Session reconvenes on April 16, the primary agenda will be to discuss and debate proposed amendments to the Women’s Reservation Act, 2023 (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam), officially known as the Constitution (One Hundred and Sixth Amendment) Act.

Addressing the media, Chief Minister Gupta said, “It is a very exciting and joyful moment for all of us that women’s reservation in Parliament and Assemblies is now very close to reality.”

Emphasising on the need for reservation, she said, “Every person, every woman, every daughter may not be able to reach this position through a normal path without support. Very few people reach here without that support.”

She urged that in today’s time and age, “women should have a major role to play” in order to run the country, make policies and also in the administration.

“When women come forward and become MPs, MLAs and Ministers, only then it will be possible to bring that change in the system that you (women) think about. Whether it is about safety (of women) or making women independent,” Gupta said.

CM Gupta also engaged in a conversation with students and teachers regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill.

Speaking to IANS, Delhi University’s Vice Chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “taking such a strong step to bring a change in the country”.

He highlighted that this Bill will work towards changing people’s mindset regarding increase in the strength of women leadership.

“We are fortunate to live in a country where there are such laws to empower girl children. Once passed, this law will have societal, political and economic impact as well,” Singh asserted.

According to professor Payal, the amended Bill will be a “milestone” for women’s development in the country. “This will pave the way for an educated and developed nation,” she said.

Joint Secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Deepika Jha, told IANS, “Because of this Bill, women and students who struggle after coming from middle class society will also get opportunities.”
