Bhubaneswar: Muharram, one of the four sacred months in Islam, is observed with great religious fervor across the world. It is also the first month of the Islamic calendar and is considered the second holiest month after Ramzan.
Muharram means sinful and forbidden. Muharram is a month of remembrance as it marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala in which Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein Ali was tortured and murdered.
This year, Muharram started on July 31 and it will conclude on August 28. In this month, the Muslims mark the ceremonial mourning on the tenth day and it’s called Ashura.
Muslims take out ‘Tazia’ (procession) to commemorate the deaths during battle, and flagellate themselves with sharp objects. The day stands as a symbol of the struggle against injustice and oppression.
Some people do fasting also; they mourn the death of Hussein and keep themselves away from every celebration.
Muslims from all over Odisha observed Muharram to mark the first month of Islamic calender.
