MGR’s Contribution To TN’s Progress Outstanding, Says PM Modi On His Birth Anniversary

Chennai: On the birth anniversary of legendary actor, philanthropist, and former Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid glowing tributes, recalling MGR as a towering personality whose life and work left an indelible imprint on Tamil Nadu and Tamil society at large.

PM Modi in his post on X said, “Paying homage to the exceptional MGR on his Jayanti. His contribution to Tamil Nadu’s progress is outstanding. Equally noteworthy is his role in popularising Tamil culture. We will always keep working to realise his vision for our society.”

MGR was not merely a cinematic icon; he was a phenomenon who seamlessly bridged the worlds of art, politics, and social service.

Rising from humble beginnings, he became one of the most beloved actors in Indian cinema, using the silver screen as a powerful medium to champion values such as social justice, compassion for the poor, women’s dignity, and respect for Tamil identity.

His on-screen persona consistently reflected the aspirations of the common man, earning him unparalleled affection across generations.

Transitioning from cinema to public life, MGR carried the same commitment into governance.

As Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, he introduced several pioneering welfare schemes that redefined inclusive governance.

From path-breaking social security measures to initiatives focused on nutrition, education, and the upliftment of the underprivileged, his policies were rooted in empathy and people-centric development.

Many of these initiatives went on to inspire welfare frameworks across the country. Equally significant was MGR’s role in popularising and preserving Tamil culture. Through his films, public speeches, and administrative actions, he ensured that the Tamil language, heritage, and pride occupied a central place in public life.

He understood culture not as a relic of the past, but as a living force that could empower society and instil self-respect among the masses. In his Jayanti message, Prime Minister Modi emphasised that MGR’s vision continues to resonate even today.

Remembering him is not merely an act of homage, but a reminder of the ideals of service, cultural pride, and inclusive growth that he stood for.

The Prime Minister affirmed that efforts will continue to realise MGR’s vision for society—one where development is compassionate, culture is celebrated, and governance truly serves the people.
