Rajamahendravaram: A picnic turned tragic for students of Eluru Asram Medical College on Sunday evening. Six medical students are feared drowned after being swept away by strong waters at Jalatarangini Waterfalls in Alluri Sitarama Raju district in Andhra Pradesh.
The incident occurred when a group of 14 students visited the waterfalls. A few of them ventured near the water’s edge but were suddenly swept away by the powerful currents. Three students were rescued by local villagers and police.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Jagadeesh Adahalli, a search operation is underway, with National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) teams alerted to assist in the rescue efforts. The area is experiencing heavy rainfall, making the search more challenging.
Fortunately, three students, Harini Priya, Botnuri Prajna, and Gayatri Puspa, were rescued by police and local villagers, and have since been discharged from the hospital after receiving medical attention.
Till the last report came in, the bodies of two students have been recovered.
Notably, Jalatarangini Waterfalls, located in the dense Maredumilli forest, is a popular tourist spot known for its scenic beauty. The area is surrounded by the Eastern Ghats, making it a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
