New Delhi: Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, tendered his resignation from office on Monday, citing health-related concerns and the need to follow medical advice. His resignation, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, takes immediate effect and is in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution, which allows the Vice President to resign by submitting a written notice to the President.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar expressed deep gratitude to President Murmu for her unwavering support and the “wonderful working relationship” they shared throughout his tenure. He also acknowledged the cooperation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers, stating that their support had been “invaluable” and that he had learned significantly during his time in office.
Reflecting on his experience as the country’s second-highest constitutional authority, Dhankhar said he cherished the warmth, trust, and affection received from Members of Parliament, and described his tenure as an enriching journey in the service of Indian democracy.
“It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period,” he wrote. “Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honor.”
As he demitted office, Dhankhar expressed pride in Bharat’s global rise and its “phenomenal achievements,” adding that he holds unwavering confidence in the nation’s brilliant future.
Dhankhar, who assumed office as Vice President in August 2022, also served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His resignation marks a rare mid-term exit from the office and comes at a time when the country is gearing up for key political and legislative developments.
