Balasore: Armed miscreants decamped with jewellery worth ₹10 lakh and ₹50,000 in cash after barging into the house in Dayanidhipur village, under Tentei Panchayat in Soro police limits, late Wednesday night.
According to sources, the seven masked robbers, wearing black face masks, tied up and assaulted five family members of Manjulata Nayak and shot a neighbour who attempted to intervene.
Alerted by Manjulata about the intruders, her son Malay Raut quickly contacted neighbours for help. However, the robbers broke into the house, tied the hands and legs of Manjulata’s family members by ripping window screens. As neighbours Balram Raut and Prashant Raut tried to intervene, the robbers, stationed on the roof, opened fire, critically wounding Balram in the chest.
The gunfire deterred other neighbours from intervening, allowing the robbers to flee. Local residents rescued the family and took them to the Soro hospital. Due to their critical condition, Rohit Nayak, Rabindra Nayak, and Balram Raut were shifted to Balasore District Headquarters Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, Soro police have launched an investigation into the incident.
