Jajpur: In a twist to the mysterious death of Village Level Worker (VLW) Smitarani Biswal of Haridaspur panchayat in Jajpur district, police on Saturday arrested the Sarpanch's husband for abetment of suicide.

Jajpur SP Charan Singh Meena said that prima facie evidences reveal that Smitarani had an extramarital affair with Sarpanch Madhusmita Bhadra's husband Rupesh Bhadra. She was over-possessive and coercing him to leave his wife and stay with her.

They had some minor argument in this regard earlier and on the fateful day, when Smitarani had gone to attend a lunch at the former's guest house, she again raised the issue.

However, instead of counselling her, Rupesh said that he can't leave his wife and challenged Smitarani to take any step possible. In the heat of the moment, she went to the restroom and committed suicide by hanging herself.

It has been revealed in her post-mortem report that Smitarani died of asphyxia due to hanging. Based on the findings, police have booked Rupesh under section 360 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
