‘Olivia Hoax’ Creates Terror After ‘Momo Challenge’, Odisha Crime Branch Issues Advisory

14 September 2018

Bhubaneswar: In today’s day and age, it has become very easy for miscreants to control over the minds of vulnerable kids. And what better way to do this than social media? Through Whatsapp, one of the most downloaded and used messaging platform, offenders have found the perfect way to reach kids and teenagers in order to manipulate them into doing something against their own will.

Following the footsteps of Blue Whale Challenge and the Momo Challenge, a new spam that goes by the name of ‘Olivia’ has been doing the rounds in Whatsapp. This unknown number first befriends young children and later sends them links to porn sites.

Taking control of the situation, Odisha Crime Branch issued an advisory today afternoon on their Twitter handle warning the children not to accept any message from suspicious number.

The agency has also advised parents to keenly watch their children’s online activity and has shared pictures of a sample conversation from ‘Olivia’.

Children are being targeted by the spam which tricks them into viewing explicit images. When the recipient demands proof of identity, the sender sends a link to pornographic images and porn sites which can disturb a young mind and steer it towards wrong direction.
