Bhubaneswar: As many as 12 cows were killed and two sustained critical injuries after a speeding truck ran over a herd of cattle on National Highway 143 near Biramitrapur in Sundargarh district in the wee hours of Saturday.
According to sources, a herd of cattle was asleep on the highway when the truck rammed into them killing 12 of them on the spot. The driver, however, fled the scene after committing the crime.
Upon being informed by locals, police reached the spot and removed the carcasses from the highway and buried them. Two injured cows have been sent for treatment.
Meanwhile, residents of Biramitrapur resented the death of 12 cows.
