12-Hour Bandh Hits Normal Life In Odisha’s Kalahandi

Bhawanipatna: Normal life was hit in Odisha’s Kalahandi district on Thursday as educational and business institutions remained closed and public transport was off the road in response to a dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to press for the local farmers’ demands.

The bandh protagonists demanded doing away with cuts by millers during paddy procurement, lowering of electricity tariff, and getting rid of all country liquor manufacturing units in the district. They also demanded that the state government take action against the distressed sale of cotton.

Several bandh supporters took to the streets to enforce the bandh and picketed outside government offices.

Emergency services were, however, kept outside the purview of the 12-hour bandh.

A few days back, BJP had organised demonstrations outside the block and RI offices in the district in support of the party’s demands.
