Angul: Locals under the banner of The Talcher Medical College Action Committee are observing a 12-hour bandh in Talcher of Angul district in protest of the delay in the opening of the medical institution in the area. The protestors are also observing a 72-hour economic blockade.
Reportedly, the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) had proposed to start the Mahanadi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Talcher of Angul district. It got the nod of the State Government in May this year, however, no progress has been made in this regard till date.
The committee has called for the protest demanding immediate functioning of the medical college. The bandh has been supported by various organisations.
The Talcher medical college is to be run by the Health and Family Welfare Department while the MCL will provide the necessary funds. It is proposed to have 100 seats capacity admission per year. It will be spread over 20 acres of land provided by the State government.
