Bhubaneswar: As many as 147 people have lost their lives in cyclones that struck Odisha over the past 12 years, Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari informed the Assembly on Thursday.
In a written reply to a question raised by Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati, the Minister said the state was affected by 12 cyclones between 2014 and 2025. Of these, four severe cyclonic storms accounted for the 147 fatalities. The total estimated loss to property and infrastructure during this period stood at ₹19,529 crore.
The highest number of deaths was reported during Cyclone Titli in 2018, which claimed 73 lives. This was followed by Cyclone Fani in 2019, which left 68 people dead. Three persons each were killed during Cyclone Hudhud in 2014 and Cyclone Yaas in 2021.
Providing details of the economic impact, Pujari said Cyclone Fani caused the highest property damage, amounting to ₹9,336.27 crore. Cyclone Hudhud resulted in losses worth ₹4,949.39 crore, while Cyclone Titli caused damage estimated at ₹2,779.32 crore.
The Minister further informed the House that more than 54.21 lakh livestock perished in these cyclones. Additionally, over 8.40 lakh houses were damaged and around 17 lakh hectares of agricultural land were affected during the calamities.
The data highlights the recurring vulnerability of Odisha to severe cyclonic storms and the extensive human and economic toll inflicted over the past decade.
