Bhubaneswar: In a disturbing trend, the Odisha Capital has reported around 150 suicides in the last six months and the majority among them are youth.
“Around 150 cases of suicide have been reported in the city in the first six months this year as compared to 140 during the corresponding period in 2020,” informed Bhubaneswar DCP Uma Shankar Dash.
Speaking to reporters here today, the Bhubaneswar DCP stated that suicide is fast emerging as a major problem in modern society.
Dash said that though the police don’t have much of a role in preventing suicides, whenever assistance has been sought, the police send the person for counselling.
“The society, friends and family members have an important role in preventing and reducing the number of suicides,” the DCP said.
He stated that it has been observed that many suicides have been prevented if the persons who are in a mental state to commit suicide got a support system at the appropriate time.
“We would like to send a message to all that every life is precious. Do not waste it on being depressed. The family they leave behind remains in sorrow forever,” Dash said.
He said the tendency to commit suicide has been found more among the youth.
