Bhubaneswar: Total 15,386 persons were killed in road accidents between 2018 and 2020 in the State. While 4,738 were killed in 2020, the number was 5,333 in 2019 and 5,315 the previous year.
As per a written reply by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, there were 32,143 road accidents in Odisha during these three years.
However, there was a drop in the number of accidents in 2020 than the previous years. In 2020, 9,817 road mishaps were reported in Odisha, as compared to 11,064 in 2019 and 11,262 in 2018. Accordingly, there has been a reduction in number of injured persons over these three years.
In 2020, 8,822 persons were injured in road accidents in Odisha while the number was 11,177 in 2019 and 11,794 in 2018, the Union Minister’s reply revealed. Nationwide also there is a drop in the number of accidents, fatalities and injuries.
According to Gadkari’s reply, there were 1,31,714 road mishap fatalities in 2020 because of 3,66,138 accidents. In 2019 and 2018, the number of deaths due to road accidents was around 1.51 lakh and the number of mishaps was around 4.50 lakh.
According to the report, across India, there is 18.46% reduction in number of accidents, 12.84% in deaths and 22.84 in the number of injuries in 2020, over 2019.
