Bhubaneswar: A total of 1,859 people have died due to snakebites in the last two years across Odisha, as revealed by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari in the state assembly on Thursday.
In a written reply to a question by BJD Basta MLA Subasini Jena, Minister Suresh Pujari revealed that 1,150 people died due to snakebites in the 2023-24 fiscal year.
Compensation has been provided to the families of 1,022 deceased persons, 22 cases have been rejected following verification, and 106 cases are pending at various levels.
Similarly, 709 snakebite deaths were reported in the 2024-25 fiscal year, of which compensation has been granted to the families of 435 deceased persons. Eight cases have been rejected, and 266 cases are pending at the Tahasildar/Sub-Collector/Collector levels due to a lack of documents.
Minster also stated that, as per the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) guidelines, the state government provides a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin through the Disaster Assistance Payment and Monitoring Systems (DAMPS) portal.
