Cuttack: In an unfortunate incident, two sisters from Safipur village under Kishannagar police limits drowned to death in Sukupaika river in Cuttack on Sunday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Sujata Das (18) and Suman Das (20).

As per reports, the incident occurred around 5 am when the girls had reportedly gone to the riverbank to pluck flowers for Khudurukuni Osa (a ritual performed by sisters for well-being of brothers). Owing to a ditch, they slipped and into the river. After struggling with the current, the duo drowned to death.

Another Sunita Das, who was accompanying the girls, rushed to inform their family members. A pall of gloom descended on the village as the girls' bodies were recovered.
